Telematics are at the core of how LOOP is doing auto insurance differently. Essentially, Telematics are the data points we collect about your driving, specifically how you drive and where you drive. Everything else, in our opinion, is irrelevant to your car insurance policy.
This data can include information like whether or not you are abiding by the local speed limits, if you're driving on a lot of unmaintained or unpaved roads, or if you're doing a lot of "stop and go" hard braking. Basically it's the kind of driving habits that can directly impact your vehicle and your overall safety.
This can also include instances where you are using your phone, but only instances where you are physically touching the screen while driving. So using Siri, or playing music, or even making a call through a hands free device would not impact your premium at all since you wouldn't be taking your eyes away from the road.
When your policy renews, we take a look at this Telematics data and adjust your premium accordingly. Are you an awesome driver who is always safe? That could mean big savings on your renewal policy's premium!
We want to make sure we are using Telematics to accurately price our customers, so we've included a feature within the LOOP app that allows you to tell us if you were actually driving your vehicle, or if you were just a passenger, that way your policy is only impacted by your own driving habits.
